The construction industry has been adversely impacted by the nation’s ongoing opioid crisis. The National Safety Council reports 70% of companies in all industries have been impacted by opioids. 

Opioids impact both the overall mental health and wellbeing of the workforce as well as company performance. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, unintentional overdoses now comprise 9.5% of occupational fatalities among all industries. 

The intersection between substance misuse, substance use disorder, and suicide has becn confirmed. Nationally in 2022, there were approximately 50,000 deaths by suicide in the US, and over 108,000 overdose deaths. Construction has the second highest rate of suicide among major industries with a rate of 56 per 100,000 workers (for men and 10.4 for females). 

40% of Americans recently reported to having been impacted personally by the opioid crisis. The construction industry has the highest rate of death from overdose among 20 industries at 130.9 per 100,000 workers. Over 70% of these deaths are related to opioids

Cal was instrumental in the launch of the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention. He serves on the Executive Committee for the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention and the Expert Advisory Group for the Center for Workplace Mental Health.

A longtime author for CFMA Building Profits, Cal has served as a past Secretary and an Executive Committee member for CFMA, and he is a recipient of CFMA’s Danny B. Parrish Outstanding Leadership Award in 2016 and the Chairman’s Award in 2017. He was named one of Engineering News-Records’ 2016 Top 25 Newsmakers for his work with suicide prevention.
